How to Report Elder Abuse in Portland

Elder abuse is an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult. Elder abuse occurs when an older adult is knowingly mistreated in such a way that their safety is at risk. “Elder abuse” is a broad term that covers a range of kinds of abuse, so let’s take a closer look at the different types and how they’re generally defined.

Elder abuse cases are becoming a bigger problem nationwide.  This elder abuse can take many forms ranging from physical abuse, neglect to psychological abuse. In 2021, Oregon had more than 11,000 vulnerable adult abuse investigations.  This is a small increase over the prior year.

Here are four local resources in Portland, OR, where you can report elder abuse:

  1. Adult Protective Services (APS) – Multnomah County – APS investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of seniors and adults with disabilities. They provide protective services to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable adults.

  2. Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) – Aging and People with Disabilities – The DHS offers services to protect and support older adults and people with disabilities, including investigating and responding to reports of elder abuse.
