Celebrating the Legacy of Mary Lee Hayes: A Centenarian’s Journey

I want to introduce you to one of the most amazing women I have ever met, Mary Lee Hayes. Her life story spans more than a century and is loved by everyone. Sometimes, as a Certified Senior Advisor, I encounter individuals who redefine the meaning of resilience, family, and joy. Mary Lee Hayes is one such person. Her story is a beautiful reminder of the importance of community, family, and compassion in times of transition.

A New Chapter at 105

For 105 years, Mary had never been hospitalized outside of childbirth. It wasn’t until recently that her journey brought her to a rehab facility—a first for this remarkable centenarian. Despite the circumstances, Mary Lee welcomed me with warmth, humor, and a touch of pride, making it a point to tell me she still had her own teeth!

As Mary Lee transitioned to this new phase of life, I had the privilege of connecting with her grandchildren and working closely with her family members. Together, we explored the best possible options for Mary’s care. We visited and evaluated three top-tier senior communities, ensuring her needs and comfort were prioritized every step of the way. Ultimately, Mary Lee found her new home at an American House senior living community. It was an informed decision made with love, guidance, and care. I was honored to provide this service to her and her family.

A Celebration to Remember

Mary’s 106th birthday was nothing short of remarkable, with standing room only, as everyone waited in line to congratulate her and take a photo. Mary Lee looked amazing, had the biggest smile, loved taking pictures, and loved to flirt with all of the eligible men – regardless of age. I was touched to be invited to join her family as they celebrated this incredible milestone the Sunday before her birthday. Surrounded by loved ones, laughter, and joy, it was a day I’ll always cherish and remember.

But the celebrations didn’t stop there. Later that week, Mary Lee was honored in a special way—the mayor of Dearborn Heights declared November 13th Mary Hayes Day. What a fitting tribute to a woman whose life has inspired many and continues to do so!

A Lesson in Grace and Community

Working with Mary and her family was more than just a professional engagement; it was a privilege. Her story reminds us of the power of perseverance, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of creating a community of care.

To Mary Lee Hayes, thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. Here’s to many more moments of joy, laughter, and love!
