How to Report Elder Abuse in Seattle

Elder abuse is an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult. Elder abuse occurs when an older adult is knowingly mistreated in such a way that their safety is at risk. “Elder abuse” is a broad term that covers a range of kinds of abuse, so let’s take a closer look at the different types and how they’re generally defined.

Elder abuse cases have been increasing over the last several years. This elder abuse can take many forms, ranging from financial abuse and neglect to sexual abuse. In 2018, Washington state had more than 60,000 vulnerable adult abuse reports.  This is a 25% increase over the prior year.

Here are four local resources in Seattle where you can report elder abuse:

  1. Seattle Human Services – Adult Protective Services (APS) – APS investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults, including seniors. They provide protective services and work to ensure the safety and well-being of elders.

King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office – Elder Abuse Project – This project focuses on prosecuting crimes against elderly individuals, offering legal support, and advocating for elder abuse victims. It works closely with law enforcement and social services to address and prevent elder abuse.

  3. Seattle Police Department – Domestic Violence & Elder Abuse Unit – The Seattle Police Department has a specialized unit that handles cases of domestic violence and elder abuse. They investigate allegations, support victims, and work with community partners to ensure the safety of elderly individuals.

  4. Sound Generations – Elder Abuse Prevention – Sound Generations offers programs and services to protect seniors from abuse, including education, resources, and direct assistance. They provide advocacy and support to ensure the safety and dignity of older adults.
