5 Signs It’s Time for Assisted Living

If you have aging parents or loved ones who live independently at home and have for some time, it can be hard to tell if it’s time to start the conversation about Assisted Living. Many of us want to stay in our own homes forever, but safety or health is an issue that shouldn’t be ignored. Assisted Living communities exist to provide a stable environment for seniors who may need additional support, while still allowing dignity, life enjoyment and an appropriate level of independence.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, it may be time to consider Assisted Living:

  1. Challenges with Safety: trouble getting up and downstairs, operating appliances or just getting around the house. Driving could be a concern as well – maybe there’s even been a fender bender or two!
  2. Changes in Personal Care or Grooming: laundry isn’t getting done and the same clothes are worn all the time. Showering becomes less frequent because it’s hard to get in and out of the bathtub or stall. Clothes are looser due to weight loss caused by not eating balanced meals.
  3. Trouble Managing Household Finances or Home Maintenance: bills are lying around and not filed away like they used to be – there might even be calls from collectors. Overall household neglect is becoming noticeable like trash piling up or spoiled food in the fridge.
  4. Progressive Social Isolation: activities or social functions that used to bring joy no longer do. Leaving the house rarely happens and hobbies are no longer of interest.
  5. Marked Cognitive Decline: forgetting to take medications, missing appointments and general confusion and frustration are becoming more apparent.

While all of these issues should be addressed, determining if Assisted Living is the way to go is not an exact science by any means. The above list includes some ideas of what to look for, but each person is different. When it comes to your own family, there may be other things that make you wonder or think to yourself “this just isn’t like him” or “I’ve never seen her like this before.”

It may be scary to confront these concerns but help exists. There are many positives to Assisted Living, many of which we’ll discuss in future blog posts. There are also alternative solutions if Assisted Living is not what your loved one wants. We know the conversation can be difficult, but if you have any concerns at all, it’s time to start that talk. After all, your loved one and you deserve safety, health, and peace of mind.
