Working with those looking to find care, I get to learn their stories—here is a little of mine. I grew up in a suburb north of Dayton, Ohio. My mother is a social worker, and after school, on weekends, and on holidays, often my siblings and I would tag along to her work at assisted living and nursing facilities. I like to count those years in my tenure! I assisted with dining, activities, and one-on-one visits with residents.
My professional journey into healthcare started at age 20 for a Continuing Care Retirement Community; my first position was in activities. When I began working in the role, I had no intention of working long-term in healthcare and senior living. My heart was set on software and web development. I applied for the position to afford the gas I needed to get to class, and I was comfortable with it after my upbringing! The role was a natural fit with my history. My passion for the field grew, leading me to withdraw from my major in software and web development to focus on a future in healthcare.
Over eight years, I held four positions across Ohio for the same company I entered the field with, going on to open two new CCRCs, including one at the get-go of COVID-19. In these roles, I met and spoke with thousands of people seeking care. Great passion was found in helping those in a time of need navigate the overwhelming process of coordinating care and matching needs to often urgently needed services and support. Since then, I have held positions working with many different populations: long-term care psychiatric & behavioral nursing, hemodialysis, waiver assisted living, those with substance use, low-income, and underserved populations who have never had access to healthcare. I co-founded a nonprofit that works with hospitals and other healthcare organizations to drive collaboration for care continuity and improve care transitions. That's how I have come to where I am today, and look forward to continuing my service to others no matter their background or situation!
