About Cogir of Old Town, Alexandria

from Oasis Senior Advisors

Cogir of Old Town, Alexandria is an assisted-living community that centers its care model on consistent medical oversight. Residents who need ongoing diabetes monitoring can receive help with blood-sugar checks, medication management, and diet coordination. On-site doctor availability streamlines routine exams and lets physicians review any changes in health without leaving the property. A licensed speech therapist comes to the community for scheduled sessions, supporting residents who have post-stroke speech challenges or progressive conditions affecting communication. The community also accepts respite or short-term stays, giving families a place to send loved ones during recovery periods or when primary caregivers are unavailable.

Beyond direct clinical services, the building is a secured community, adding an extra level of safety for residents prone to wandering or memory-related concerns. Staff members monitor entrances and exits and are trained to respond to emergencies around the clock. Assistance with activities of daily living—such as bathing, dressing, and medication reminders—is provided based on individual service plans. Routine health assessments help the team adjust support levels as needs change, and care coordination with outside specialists is available when residents require additional therapies or consultations.

Apartments at Cogir of Old Town, Alexandria vary in size and layout, and not every unit includes every amenity. Many residences feature kitchenettes, Wi-Fi access, individual climate control, and wheelchair-accessible showers. Some apartments overlook landscaped outdoor areas, while others are closer to shared spaces like the central fireplace or piano lounge. The community is pet friendly, though specific restrictions apply, and common areas are handicap accessible from the parking lot to interior hallways.

Meals are prepared by a professional chef and served in a restaurant-style dining room. Residents can order from an all-day dining menu that features international cuisine, vegetarian selections, low- or no-sodium plates, and no-sugar options for those with dietary restrictions. Guest meals are available for visiting family members, and light snacks remain accessible outside standard meal periods. Menu planning coordinates with the clinical team to align nutritional content with individual health plans, including diabetes management.

Recreational and wellness programming is structured but flexible. An activity center hosts daily events such as karaoke, live music, yoga or chair yoga, and Montessori-informed sessions that support cognitive engagement. Indoor and outdoor walking paths, a swimming pool, and organized social outings promote physical activity. Residents can join clubs and communities, attend happy hour, browse the library and computer lounge, or participate in reminiscence, sensory-based, and intergenerational programs. Birthday parties and other celebrations are routinely scheduled, and outdoor areas remain accessible when weather permits.

Sunrise of Old Town Alexandria was my favorite of all the places we toured. It was brand new. There was nothing not to like. It was just too expensive.

We had an excellent chef to start with when I arrived and then she quit. They brought an intern in to train sous chefs and the biggest problem has been the food arrival time and the temperature of the food. I know that they are trying to work on it.
