The Grande at South Portland provides three levels of residence—Assisted Living, Independent Living, and a secured Memory Care program. Clinical support is set up for residents who wander at any time of day, present elopement risks, display combative or other challenging behaviors, remain awake throughout the night, or live with advanced dementia. Nurses monitor and treat wounds, manage oxygen therapy, administer both oral and injectable diabetes medications (including sliding-scale insulin), and accommodate physician-ordered special diets. The community can also admit younger adults under 60 when the care needs match available services.

A licensed nurse is on-site 24 hours a day, backed by additional RN/LPN staff, routine background checks, and awake night personnel. Residents have access to a pull-cord system and personal emergency response devices that alert staff instantly, and the building is monitored around the clock. Podiatry visits occur on-site. Caregivers can provide full assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting and can complete transfers ranging from stand-by help to two-person lifts for wheelchair users. Walkers and one-person transfers are part of standard support.

Apartments are designed for aging in place. Most include a private bathroom, and many have a kitchenette, independent temperature controls, and cable service; residents may paint or decorate their rooms to suit their preferences. Not all units offer every feature, so it is best to confirm specifics during a tour.

Meals are prepared three times daily with both set menus and on-order selections. Between-meal snacks are available, and the kitchen staff follow individualized diet modifications, including diabetic, low-salt, and physician-directed therapeutic plans.

Residents have access to parking, outdoor smoking areas, and pet-friendly policies; it’s a good idea to check with the community during your visit to see if your pet will be allowed. Common spaces include a wheelchair-accessible barber and beauty shop, exercise room, movie room, wellness center, library and lounge, and internet access throughout the building. Cocktails by the fireplace, communal gardens, and outdoor patios offer additional gathering spots, and on-site religious services, mail and newspaper delivery, and scheduled transportation round out the service package.
